Authorship

How I describe AI use

I use AI when it is useful, but I want readers to be able to see where it entered the process. Each article therefore includes a small authorship indicator showing where AI helped and where I did the work myself.

How to read the indicator

Teal = AI assistanceOchre = Dinesh
0None
1Light
2Moderate
3Substantial
4Primary

Every row always contains four blocks. Teal shows how much AI assistance I used at that stage; ochre shows the rest of the process that I handled myself. The blocks are a simple visual indication, not a literal percentage of human versus AI contribution.

What the categories mean

Ideas

Brainstorming, exploring angles, generating questions or considering alternative directions before I begin writing.

Research

Finding background material, locating sources, summarising information or helping investigate and check a claim.

Structure

Helping organise the argument, sequence sections, group ideas or test the overall flow of the article.

Writing

Drafting, rewriting or generating language that contributes directly to the published prose.

Editing

Critiquing, proofreading, spotting repetition or suggesting improvements without taking over the prose.

Visuals

Generating or substantially assisting with illustrations, diagrams or other imagery.

Writing has a stricter meaning

Research, brainstorming or structural help is different from AI supplying the prose that appears under my name. So I treat the Writing row more strictly than the others.

Writing 0 — I wrote the published prose myself.

Writing 1 — AI gave limited wording or rewrite suggestions; the piece remains substantially my writing.

Writing 2 — AI supplied some passages or rewrites that materially contributed to the published prose.

Writing 3 — substantial portions of the prose originated with AI.

Writing 4 — AI produced most of the draft.

If AI supplies sentences that end up in an article — including a substantial rewrite of something I wrote — I count that under Writing. Editing means critique, proofreading or suggestions rather than AI taking over the prose.

Why I separate the stages

AI helping me explore an idea or find background information is different from AI writing sentences that appear in the finished article. Keeping Ideas, Research, Structure, Writing, Editing and Visuals separate makes that distinction visible at a glance.

The indicator is not a quality score or a claim of mathematical precision. It is simply a compact way of being clear about how an article was made.
